4 min read

Weekly Fishing Report · Tight Line Anglers · Los Barriles, Baja California Sur

Fish On! This East Cape fishing report is cubera and pargo on the rocks, yellowtail and amberjack on the high spots, and marlin doubles when the bait shows. Warm blue water is holding, seas are settling after today's bump, and Tropical Storm Simon is still worth a glance — no NHC watches for Baja California Sur, but keep monitoring.

At a Glance: Los Barriles / East Cape, Oct 15–21

  • Bite: Cubera and pargo · yellowtail and amberjack · marlin doubles · beach and inshore roosters

  • Water: ~89°F (32°C) East Cape; ~89°F (31°C) Cabo; ~86°F (30°C) Mag Bay (model)

  • Seas / wind: East Cape ~3 ft today, under 2 ft from Fri; light–moderate breeze

  • Moon: First quarter Sat Oct 18, 9:12 AM BCS

  • Storm status: TS Simon ~270 mi SSE of Cabo — no BCS watches; monitor. Hurricane Trudy is a mainland track

  • Overall: Good Thu–Wed ✅ (check port status if swells build)

Storm Watch: Tropical Storm Simon

As of NHC Advisory 32 (2 AM MST / BCS), Tropical Storm Simon was nearly stationary near 19.2N 108.5W — about 270 miles (435 km) SSE of Cabo — with 60 mph (95 km/h) winds. No coastal watches or warnings, but BCS interests should still monitor.

Simon should drift slowly through tonight, then northwest through the weekend and become a remnant low by late weekend. NHC expects 1–2 inches of rain (isolated 3) over portions of BCS through early Saturday, plus swells that can bring dangerous surf and rips. Hurricane Trudy (75 mph) is aimed at mainland Mexico this weekend — not the Cape.

What's Biting

Offshore: Marlin Doubles and Live Bait Deep

Offshore has been earning it. Striped marlin have been doubling up, and marlin and sails have been eating live caballitos fished halfway down. When the mackerel showed up, yellowtail and amberjack came with them. Yellowfin and sailfish are still in the mix, and striped marlin have been showing off Cabo as Bisbee's wraps its fishing days.

Structure: Cubera, Pargo, Yellowtail and Amberjack

Cubera snapper have been the heavyweights on the rocks — thick fish that pull like they own the ledge. Pargo are eating chrome jigs on the same structure, and mullet snapper have been answering green and chrome metal jigs. Yellowtail are strong on the high spots on live mackerel, and amberjack still turn for the rocks the second they feel you.

Roosters: Beach and Inshore

Roosters are active on the beaches early and tight to the sand, and the inshore bite has been solid. Pink and red baitfish flies have been getting eaten.

Conditions on the Water

  • Thu (today): NW breeze to ~14 mph, gusts near 24; East Cape seas ~3–3.5 ft (1.0 m). Fishable — pick your window.

  • Fri: Lighter wind, seas toward 2 ft (0.6 m). Structure or offshore if the port is open.

  • Sat–Sun: Highs near 90°F (32°C). Seas under ~2 ft on our side. First quarter Saturday morning means good water movement.

  • Mon–Wed: Light breeze, East Cape seas under 1–1.5 ft. Quiet rooster mornings, then structure or offshore.

  • Cabo / Mag Bay: Cabo ~5–6 ft; Mag Bay ~5–6 ft. Plan the Pacific side around swell.

Gear & Flies This Week

  • Pargo / cubera: Heavy spinning, chrome or silver vertical jigs; green/chrome metal jigs for mullet snapper. Lock the drag and turn them early.

  • Yellowtail and amberjack: Live mackerel on the high spots; heavy conventional. Turn the head fast or you're retying.

  • Marlin and sails: Live caballitos (and mackerel when they're around) fished halfway down. Heavy conventional — doubles happen.

  • Beach roosters: Pink and red baitfish flies on a 10–12 wt, clear intermediate, 30–40 lb fluoro — or light spinning early.
