Trip Prep & Gear Guide
Everything you need to know for your guided fishing adventure with Tight Line Anglers in Baja Sur. Download our e-book below for even more detailed info.
What to Expect on the Water
Whether you're casting flies from the beach or chasing pelagics offshore, expect full days of action, personalized guidance, and unforgettable scenery. Beach days start early, launching from Los Barriles or nearby spots. Offshore trips head out from panga or sport boats, chasing dorado, marlin, and tuna depending on the season. Our guides tailor each outing to your goals, skill level, and current conditions.
Fly Fishing & Conventional Gear
Fly anglers: We recommend bringing 9–12 wt rods for beach and offshore action. Floating or intermediate lines for beach fishing, and full-sink lines offshore. We provide backup rods and reels, but you're welcome to bring your own setup.
Conventional anglers: Our boats are fully equipped with high-quality spinning and trolling setups. You’re welcome to bring personal gear, but our captains have you covered if you don’t.
What Flies to Bring
For the beach, focus on durable patterns that push water and hold up in surf:
-
Brush flies (white, tan, olive)
-
Sardina and baitfish imitations
-
Clouser Minnows (chartreuse/white, blue/white)
-
EP baitfish patterns
-
Surf candy for calm conditions
Bring a mix of sizes (2/0 to 6/0), and extra leaders (30–80 lb fluorocarbon). We also carry select proven flies.
What to Wear: Clothing & Sun Protection
Beach Days: Lightweight, breathable clothing with full sun protection is key. Long-sleeve UV shirts, quick-dry pants, sun gaiters, and polarized sunglasses are a must. Pack sturdy water shoes or sandals with good grip.
Offshore Days: Similar sun coverage is essential. Bring a light windbreaker or jacket for early mornings or spray. Boat-friendly footwear like non-marking deck shoes is recommended.
Fighting Baja Fish: What to Expect
Whether it’s a beach rooster or offshore marlin, Baja fish bring power. Expect long runs, quick turns, and a true test of your tackle. We coach you through the fight—techniques, angles, and endurance. It's intense, but unforgettable. Hydrate often and be ready to sweat.
